Once children have learned a series of multiplication tables they need to be able to quickly answer a mixed selection of questions. This game is designed to build their skills in doing this at speed.
The game has three levels, beginning with facts that involve 2, 3, 4 or 5 multiplied by 2, 3, 4 or 5, and then moving on to {2, 3, 4, 5 } x {6, 7, 8, 9} and finally {6, 7, 8, 9} x {6, 7, 8, 9}.
The game is introduced through a short slide show. Explanatory notes are given for each slide for use by either a teacher or a parent. These can be found in the presenter’s notes for the slide.
The activity is made engaging by first presenting the pupils with the challenge of trying to work out from some part-completed games how the game works. Once learned, it is best played daily over a couple of weeks, with the skill level being gradually increased as the speed improves.
To play the game, children will need blank copies of the Tables Quiz Speed Game grids and also a set of blank Tap Say Turn cards which they can use to make up personalised tables fact flash cards for their own revision.
