This is an open-ended extended exploration designed to be used over multiple weeks. Each section builds on the learning from the previous one but is does not need all to be completed at once. It begins with measuring packets of food from the store cupboard, moves on to unfolding and measuring nets, explores area and volume and surface area, which can all be explored simply by counting squares and cubes. As the exploration progresses, there are several whole-class think-pair-share challenges which lead to children working in teams on a number of practical investigations. At various points, they then use the resulting diagrams to play talking games to consolidate the correct use of mathematical language.
