Unit 9.3.1 Part 4

PART 4

Learning Intention

  • How can I compare the surface areas and volumes of cuboids?

Pupil Task:

  • Draw on squared paper, labelled diagrams to represent the different faces of a cuboid.
  • Work out their areas and hence find the total surface area of the cuboid.

Teacher Guidance:

  • The suggestion here is that all the groups use the same number of cubes but create different cuboids with them.
  • Once the children have drawn their (carefully)-labelled diagrams there can then be a whole-class discussion about the fact that all the cuboids have the same volume but they have different surface areas.
  • This has interesting implications in real life situations such as heat loss or melting.
