Opening Young Minds to Endless Possibilities

5.1.1.2 Counting Sounds

Young children love music.  Clapping and counting sounds are the beginning of understanding rhythm. Here are some activities to try.

Skill: Copy and count temporal patterns and temporal sequences

Questions: Can you copy my clapping? Can you make a clapping pattern? Can we clap together? Can you count my claps?  How many are there?  Shall we clap and count together?  Can we clap the same number of claps in a different pattern?  Is that possible?

Skill: Use finger patterns to keep track of temporal patterns (like beats of a drum or jumps)

Questions: Can we use our fingers to help us count the claps?
